Let’s talk about airplanes, travel, and a little bit about Denver International Airport, we all call it DIA, but a couple of years ago they changed their branding and marketing to DEN. Whatever, doesn’t really matter, as I think most Coloradoans, Western Nebraskans, Southern Wyomingans, and Western Kansasites know what it is. Denver International Airport is a major airport and hub for United Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and Southwest Airlines. Being the largest airport based on land size in the Western Hemisphere, and its ever growing economic engine, it makes sense why it and the roads out there are constantly under construction.

The Queen of the Sky
Getting to fly on a 747 from Denver’s DIA to Chicago O’Hare. The 747 is referred to as the Queen of the Sky, and as a kid, there was no cooler airplane to me. Couldn’t tell you for certain, but I don’t remember the 747 passing through Denver often, as it was generally used for long-haul international destinations. Anyway, back to the trip to Chicago, we were taking off and there was a thunderstorm. As we were climbing out, lightning struck the plane and caused the power to go out.Â
At this moment, I knew it was over and we were all going to die. Well, turns out, some Boeing engineer thought of some safety measures and ways for the airplane to essentially absorb the strike and dissipate the energy; no problem at all. After a minute or two, the lights came back on and the pilot told us what we all knew (that lightning had struck the plane), except that the airplane was functioning properly and we were still on our way. Glad I lived to tell about it.Â
Air Travel Still Feels Like Magic
As the 747 became more and more rare to see at DIA, my new favorite airplane became the Boeing 777. The amazement that I had then is similar to it now, that through modern engineering, they are able to make sure large planes fly, and the safety of them both is impeccable. United Airlines was a launch customer for the Boeing 777 and is still used today. As DEN continues to grow and expand, as does United’s footprint there, we tend to see more and more 777’s passing through.Â
If you have never gotten an opportunity to fly on one, it is a pretty cool experience and worth doing – plus with the cold we are having, United is flying the 777 to Hawaii (Honolulu, Kona, and Maui) daily. I don’t know about you but I could always go for a Hawaii vacation! Hope you enjoyed the blog, let us know what your favorite aircrafts or airports are.Â
