September in Colorado: The Best of Both Seasons

Why September Shines in Northern Colorado

September is quickly approaching, and it’s one of the best times of the year in Colorado. Between the cooler temps, the aroma of roasted green hatch chilies, and the lineup of local events, this month is the perfect bridge between summer and fall. Outdoor activities are comfortable, enjoyable, and plentiful.

Classic Cars and Community Fun

One of my favorite traditions is the annual car show in Windsor or Severance over Labor Day weekend. It’s a unique mix of classic and modern vehicles, and sometimes even motorcycles. Best of all—it’s free to attend and always draws a great crowd.

A Sports Fan’s Dream Month

September is also prime time for sports lovers. It’s the perfect blend of late-season MLB baseball, the kickoff of NFL and college football, and the start of the Colorado Avalanche’s season. While it’s a safe bet the Rockies won’t make it past September, there’s always new hope for the CSU Rams and Denver Broncos.

The Gift of Perfect Weather and Chasing the Colors of Fall

For those not from Colorado, the temperatures in September are about as close to perfect as it gets. In Fort Collins, the average high is 77° and the low is 48°, making it a mild and easy transition into fall.

September also marks the start of Colorado’s famous leaf-peeping season. The changing aspens in the high country attract visitors from across the nation. My family especially loves driving Highway 40 toward Steamboat Springs, where the scenery of golden aspens is hard to beat. Keep an eye on temperatures, though—the timing of the color change can shift year to year.

What’s Your Favorite September Tradition?

Those are just a few of the reasons I look forward to September in Colorado. What about you? Comment below and share your favorite activities, events, or traditions during this special month—we’re always looking for new things to explore.
