A Visit to Eastern Colorado – Akron and The Snake Pit
A Visit to Eastern Colorado – Akron
I recently got the opportunity to take a day trip out to eastern Colorado; a part of the state that is perhaps less visible than our pristine mountains. I figured this would just be a good story to tell, and possibly encourage a new adventure for you. We left Fort Collins and took Highway 14 east. The amount of oversized loads that semi’s were carrying certainly explained the large number of blown tires that seemed endless from Briggsdale east. If you go this route, definitely pay attention.Â
Lookin’ for BBQ
With some prior research, we decided to pull into the small town of Akron. A town of a little under 1,800 people. We arrived just in time for lunch and the pre-scoped out spot; The Snake Pit BBQ. The reviews and commentary about this establishment were highly complimentary and something I wanted to try. As we walked in, we were greeted by a guy who said he was the owner – a Harley Davidson tank top and full sleeve tattoos being worn. The menu was plentiful and almost everything sounded good. The group I was with got a mixture of wings, fries, and cheeseburgers (we wanted brisket but they said they currently didn’t have any done). The wings were smoked and then covered in a hot sauce and were delicious. They also served homemade root beer which looked good but I didn’t try any.
The Snake Pit
The restaurant is a unique setting. On one side are two bowling lanes which didn’t appear to either be on or functioning while we were there, and then further in the back several arcade games. There was also a large glass display case with a large, but fake rattlesnake holding a bottle of their root beer in his tail (pictured). They also had several pieces of merchandise for sale with their Snake Pit logo on it. I ended up buying a skull cap, because why not – I gave it away and it was funny.
The Road Less Traveled
So take a day trip out to Akron, hit up the restaurant, and tell them I sent you. They will have no idea who I am, but hey, who knows, maybe one day they will want to buy real estate in Fort Collins. Take a trip, enjoy the food, and explore everything this state has to offer. I’ve often found that the mom and pop restaurants are some of the best, and this proved to be true here. Unfortunately they don’t have a website, but I included a link for an article that was written about the establishment.
