From ‘The Jungles’ to New Belgium Brews

The Buckingham Chronicle: From ‘The Jungles’ Origins to New Belgium Brews

Let’s take a look back into one of Fort Collins most historic neighborhoods, and what was known then as “The Jungles”. The Jungles was the Buckingham neighborhood which still to this day sits just to the northeast of Old Town Fort Collins. Back in the early 1900’s it was known as a tough part of town due to multiple houses of prostitution, bars, and dance halls all operating just outside of city limits.

A Tough Part of Town

It was also where Fort Collins Police had their first line of duty death – on July 3, 1907 Joseph Allen was patrolling this area and making house calls in the neighborhood. Later in the night, a citizen heard groans from an alley near Hall’s barn and found Officer Allen unconscious on the ground in a pool of blood. He was taken to the hospital and later died after never regaining consciousness.

Investigators found a bloody brick near where Officer Allen was found. His gun and club both stolen from him. Three men were arrested, but released because of a lack of evidence. Officer Joseph Allen’s death remains Fort Collins’ first cold case file. To this day, Fort Collins Police has only had two line of duty deaths.

Buckingham Today

Much has changed from 1907 to today. Now, the neighborhood is fully annexed and in town and consists of 1,227 residents. The Buckingham median real estate price is $534,360 which is more expensive than 55.4% of the neighborhoods in Colorado and 76.2% more expensive than neighborhoods in the U.S. According to neighborhoodscout.com the average rental price in this neighborhood is $2,736. Homes in the neighborhood are primarily made up of medium sized (3-4 bedrooms) ranging to smaller single family homes and mobile homes.

Becoming the Location of New Belgium Brewing

Today it is also home to one of Fort Collins’ largest and better known breweries, New Belgium Brewing Company. Located at 500 Linden Street sits the growing brewery and has been its home there since October 1995. Most recently, New Belgium has made headlines for becoming America’s first certified carbon neutral beer. If you are in the area, the tour and beer sampling, is well worth the stop.
