Inflation Keeps Taking Away My Favorite Eats
As a Fort Collins resident, I’ve watched with a heavy heart as some of my favorite local eateries have closed their doors, victims of the relentless march of inflation. The rising costs of ingredients, labor, and rent have made it increasingly difficult for these establishments to stay afloat, leading to a wave of closures that have left our community’s culinary landscape forever changed.
Great Harvest Bread Co.
After more than 30 years in Fort Collins’ Scotch Pines Village shopping center, Great Harvest Bread Co. baked its final loaves on December 24, 2024. Owner Julie Damschroder, who had been at the helm since 2007, decided to close the bakery to pursue a new opportunity. While the official reason for the closure was a personal career change, it’s hard to ignore the broader economic pressures that have made running a small bakery increasingly challenging.
The Post Chicken & Beer
In June 2024, The Post Chicken & Beer abruptly shut down its Fort Collins location, leaving a heartfelt handwritten note on the door thanking patrons for their support over the years. While specific reasons for the closure were not provided, the sudden nature of the shutdown suggests that financial difficulties, possibly exacerbated by inflation, played a significant role.
Krazy Karl’s Pizza
Krazy Karl’s Pizza announced on January 15, 2025, that they would be closing their original Campus West location near Colorado State University. The decision was made to merge operations with their Timberline Road location, allowing for expansion and increased efficiency. While this move consolidates their presence in Fort Collins, it also marks the end of an era for the beloved original spot.
Other Notable Closures
The past year has seen several other cherished Fort Collins establishments close their doors. Avuncular Bob’s Beerhouse, Black Bottle Brewery, Blind Pig Pub, and The Fox and the Crow are among the casualties. Each of these closures represents a loss to the community, as unique flavors and gathering spots vanish under economic strain.
The Bigger Picture
These closures are not isolated incidents but part of a troubling trend affecting restaurants nationwide. Inflation has driven up the cost of doing business, from raw ingredients to utilities, making it difficult for establishments to maintain profitability without passing costs onto consumers. This often results in higher menu prices, which can deter patrons and create a vicious cycle leading to closure.
As we bid farewell to these beloved eateries, it’s a stark reminder of the broader economic challenges facing small businesses today. Supporting local establishments has never been more critical, as each meal we enjoy contributes to the vibrancy and diversity of our community’s culinary scene.
