Celebrating Mental Health Awareness: The Journey of SummitStone Health Partners
May is Mental Health Month, a time to spotlight the crucial role mental health plays in our lives and acknowledge the institutions that provide vital services. One such beacon of support in the Fort Collins and broader Northern Colorado community is SummitStone Health Partners. This blog explores the evolution and impact of SummitStone, a key player in regional mental health care.
A Pioneer From the Start
The story of SummitStone began in 1957 when Larimer County launched its Mental Health department, a progressive move six years ahead of the national Community Mental Health Act of 1963. This early initiative set the stage for a longstanding commitment to delivering compassionate care locally, fostering better outcomes and integration into the community.
Transition to a Non-Profit Model
In 2000, Larimer County transitioned its mental health services from a government-run model to a private, non-profit organization, establishing the Larimer Center for Mental Health. This shift allowed for more specialized and focused care, tailoring services to the unique needs of the community.
Expansions and MergersÂ
Significant developments continued as the Larimer Center for Mental Health merged with the Namaqua Center on August 1, 2007. This merger expanded services to families of children who faced trauma, behavioral challenges, or mental illnesses, enhancing the scope and depth of care available.
Rebranding and Growth
The organization underwent a rebranding in 2012, becoming Touchstone Health Partners, and later modernized its identity to SummitStone Health Partners in 2015. Today, SummitStone stands as Larimer County’s largest provider of behavioral healthcare services for Medicaid clients, serving over 10,000 individuals annually with a dedicated team of nearly 700 employees.
A Commitment to Inclusive Care
SummitStone is deeply committed to principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice, ensuring equitable healthcare access to all community members. Their latest initiative includes the Longview Campus, which opened its doors at 2260 W. Trilby Road, Fort Collins. This new facility offers walk-in services at their behavioral health urgent care and an Acute Care Facility, further broadening their reach and capabilities.
Looking Forward
As SummitStone continues to grow and adapt to the expanding needs of our community, their impact on countless lives remains a testament to the power of dedicated mental health care.
