These frontiersmen were often faced with unpredictably harsh conditions, from biting cold winters to the challenges of navigating the Rockies.
A Name Born Out of Necessity
The story behind the Poudre River’s name can be traced back to these very trappers. The word “Poudre” (pronounced “Poo-der”) is French for “powder”. As the legend goes, a group of French fur trappers, caught in a terrible snowstorm in the region, found themselves in dire straits. To lighten their load and progress faster, they were forced to bury a large part of their gunpowder supplies along the banks of the river. When the storm abated and they were finally able to journey back, the river served as a landmark for where they had hidden their supplies. Thus, the river became known as “Cache la Poudre,” or “Hide the Powder” in English.
