The Fort Collins Police Department recently put on a public education talk at the Elizabeth Hotel about their police dogs, and I found it fascinating! From the services they provide, how they are trained, and lets face it, how cute they are (until they are flying through a screen door barking in Hungarian ready to latch on to you).
In the realm of law enforcement, K9 units have become indispensable assets, enhancing the capabilities of police departments across the nation. In Fort Collins, Colorado, the Police Services’ K9 Unit exemplifies this integration, utilizing highly trained dogs to perform a multitude of critical tasks that ensure public safety and support officers in the field.
Composition of the FoCo K9 Unit
The Fort Collins Police Services K9 Unit comprises seven dedicated dog-handler teams. This includes six dual-purpose patrol and narcotics detection dogs, and one single-purpose explosives detection dog. These teams are meticulously trained to handle a variety of situations, from routine patrols to specialized detection tasks.
Key Functions of K9 Teams
The versatility of K9 units allows them to undertake several essential functions within law enforcement operations:
Scent Tracking
K9s possess an extraordinary sense of smell, enabling them to track missing persons, locate fleeing suspects, and find evidence that may be undetectable to human officers. Their olfactory capabilities are crucial in time-sensitive situations, increasing the likelihood of successful outcomes.
Apprehending Suspects
In scenarios involving uncooperative or dangerous individuals, K9s are deployed to assist in apprehending suspects. Their presence alone often acts as a deterrent, and when necessary, they are trained to subdue individuals, ensuring the safety of officers and the public. Officer Brett Dollar of Fort Collins Police Services notes that in many cases, the mere presence of a K9 like Yago prompts suspects to surrender without further incident.
Explosive Detection
The specialized explosives detection dog within the unit plays a pivotal role in identifying potential threats. Through rigorous training, this K9 can detect a wide range of explosive materials, thereby preventing potential disasters and enhancing public safety.
Narcotics Detection

Plus we learned a very tangible benefit where items dropped by officers, maybe during a foot chase, can be tracked down by K9s, saving money and time in recovering or replacing lost gear.
Investment in K9 Units
Establishing and maintaining a K9 unit requires significant financial commitment. The initial cost of acquiring a police dog ranges from $15,000 to $45,000, depending on the dog’s training and capabilities. Training expenses can add an additional $12,000 to $15,000 per canine (or higher for more specialized training such as explosive training). These figures encompass the purchase of the dog, specialized training programs, and necessary equipment.
Despite these costs, the return on investment is substantial. K9 teams enhance operational efficiency, often saving between 800 and 1,000 man-hours per year. Their ability to perform tasks that would otherwise require multiple officers or specialized equipment makes them invaluable assets to the department.
K9s in Broader Public Service
The application of K9s extends beyond traditional policing. In search and rescue missions, their keen sense of smell and agility enable them to navigate challenging terrains to locate missing persons. After attending the event, I gained a new appreciation for the value, and terrifying presents to criminals of K9s in our police force (and the amount of drool one dog can produce). The Fort Collins Police Services K9 Unit exemplifies the profound impact that well-trained police dogs have on community safety and law enforcement efficiency. Through their specialized skills in scent tracking, suspect apprehension, and detection of explosives and narcotics, these K9 teams are indispensable. While the financial investment is considerable, the benefits they provide in enhancing public safety and supporting police operations are invaluable, solidifying their role as essential members of the law enforcement community.
